Well right now I am sitting in a hospital room at the Children's Hospital here in Omaha. Kyle is down with Kambryn getting xrays on her stomach and chest to figure out what is going on inside her little petite body. It is such a helpless feeling seeing your child this sick, being poked and proaded for the last 24 hours, all while trying to maintain courage and a happy face inorder to keep your daughter from freaking out at every nurse that walks through her door.
It started on Monday morning around 7am when she woke up with a slight temperature (keep in mind she just broke her collarbone on Friday) We didn't think anything of the fever because it was pretty much gone by about 11am. Kyle and I honestly thought it was something related to her trauma and breaking her collarbone, or side effect from the pain meds. So Monday comes and goes, we have a fabulous candy birthday party for her that day (another post for that fun time), her and Jants went to my soccer game with me that night, she gets in bed aroun 9:30 and things were great. Well in the middle of the night I hear Kambryn crying from her room and I go in and check on her and she is burning up. I went and got the thermometer and her temp was around 103.4. I gave her a dose of motrin and layed next to her in her bed to try and get her to sleep. About an hour later, she was still awake (totally lethargic) and I take her temp again and it read 103.6. The motrin did nothing to relieve her fever. I knew something was wrong and that we should take her into see her doctor.
I called her pediatrician around 9 am and they said just to bring her down as soon as possible and they will squeeze her in. With Kambryn looking literally like death and Talan fed, the three of us jump in the car and head to the doctor. Well in my rush to get there, I happen to be speeding and get pulled over. Lame! My car registration had expired and apparently my GPS was in a place that obstructed my driving view. So as the officer is slowly describing each of my infractions, I turned to him, started bawling and said that I had a sick child that just broke her collarbone and has a fever of 103. After about 5 minutes of trying to convince him that I wasn't making it up (all he had to do was look at Kambryn in the back seat and he would have seen how sickly she was), well he ended up letting me go on just a warning, of course after making it clear that it wasn't because I was crying. Well thanks goodness!
So after I pull back out I called Kyle and was talking to him and telling him the little story, I heard Kambryn start to whimper and saying that she just spit up. I looked in my rear view mirror just in time to see her throw up all over herself. It was awful! Poor girl, running a temp of 103, yellow liquid stuff coming out her nose, mouth, tears, spit up, everything going all over her. it was so Sad!!! I was already bawling to Kyle, I just started crying harder. My poor little Kambryn.
So Kyle hurry and met us at the doctors. I just have to say that I love my pediatrician and all the nurses and receptionist. These past few days could have been so much worse but I am just thankful for their support, concern and overall kindness. So anyways, we spent about 3.5 hours at the pediatricians. Doing blood test (ended up clotting and not being useful), getting a urine sample (ended up being contaminated, so again not useful) and then a strep test (nice cottan swab shoveled down her throat)...what a fun day! So we left with not a whole lot of information on what it was...we just were able to rule out some stuff. She doesn't have the flu, doesn't have pnemonia, strep throat, ear infections, all the basic things that a doctor can rule out with basic tests. Dr. Harrison said it might be a bad urinary tract infection and he was afraid it might be going up into her kidneys and causing a kidney infection.
So off we drive back home with directions to just monitor her and see how she is doing through the night. Keep giving her motrin and trying to keep her fever down to about 103, if not lower. We get home around 3:00 and Kyle has to take off to work and then he has a class that night also. But fortunately before he went to his class, she was able to get a blessing from Kyle and one of our neighbors. It was so comforting to know she had been blessed. So I am home with the 3 kids. Kambryn didn't get better. She came home and went to sleep, when she woke up, her temp was at 105 and still throwing up, not even able to keep water or her motrin down. I called the doctor's office right before the closed and they said to give her a luke warm bath to try and fight the temperature. Keep trying to give her water and maybe get some tylenol in her if she isn't keeping motrin down. After her bath, her temperature went down to about 102 and she was able to fall asleep again. At about 7pm, she woke up and was totally in histerics, hallucinating and freaked out. It scared me to death. I can't describe the terror she was in and how scared I was. I didn't know what was wrong with her, it really was almost like she was possessed or something. Scary. I even made Jantsen run down the street and get our good friend Jon and made him run back over her. It took her about 20 minutes to finally calm down and get alittle back to normal.
So the night was long too. It consisted of her temperature staying at about 103-103.8 all through the night, she was throwing up constantly. At 9am on Wednesday I called the doctor and of course they remembered me and put me right through to the nurses. (what a great doctor's office I go to!!) He told us to go down to the children's hospital and we needed to get another blood and urine sample. This time they had to draw blood out of her arm (instead of just a finger prick) and they also had to catheter her. AWFUL!!! I felt so bad that I had to hold her down. I just bawled and bawled the whole time they were doing this. Kyle had to leave the room, he didn't want to watch this happen to his little girl. Then we were sent back to the pediatrician to get the results. So now her temperature is still at about 103 and we have put our little girl through all these tests and pokes. It was so sad! Well Dr Harrison looked at the results and said he was really concerned how high her white blood cell count was. Wait what?! White blood cell count...when I hear that I start thinking leukemia immediately. I was a wreck. He told us we needed to check into the hospital for 24 hours to monitor her so we can see what is going on in her little body. Again they have ruled out the flu and pnemonia (lungs sound great) and ear infection. So now they are just wondering what type of infection is going on and where exactly it is and how did she get it. So he sends us off to the Children's Hospital, but only after 2 huge doses of antibiotics, in which they have to put in her thighs. Again, I have to hold her down and bawl with her.
So now here we are...waiting. not knowing, being confined to a room, in which she is in isolation. All the nurses and doctors have to wear a mask and also a disposable jacket every time they come into her room. This whole thing is just so scary for Kambryn. So hopefully her temperature starts to go down. She hasn't thrown up since 10 this morning, but she is still at about 102.5 degree temperature.
Here is Kambryn with her IV in her, watching a movie. Day 1 at Children's Hospital. Her temperature is still 102 degrees. Poor girl. Broken right collarbone, IV needle in her left hand. Luckily the disney movie library here is great! I am sure we will spend lots of time watching many princess movies!
Oh and we did have her 3rd birthday party on Monday, So once this is all over, I can catch up on that, Easter, Talan's blessing. Wow so many things!!
(The rest of the story to be posted later...hopefully soon! like later tonight)
